OOC Note:
Time is moving differently for Q than for the other characters, because the Continuum isn't bound to the same linear timestream as everyone else lives in. Unlike the dimension of the Prophets, the Continuum *has* an internal linear timestream, but it has nothing to do with the one everyone else lives under. So when Q comes out into "our" timeline, he's generally more or less deliberately picking an exit and entry point-- he could jump to any time period in "our" universe and it would be equally as valid for him.
Thus, it's been 3,000 years of Earth years in the Continuum since the war, even though by Star Trek time it was only two or three years ago, and Q's son is by our standards emotionally about 9 or so. By the time the episode "Q2" takes place in two Star Trek timeline years, many more thousands of years will have passed and young Q will be approximately 15 or 16.
Also, because of the timeline thing and because, as much as I loved Peter David's "Q-Squared", it's been rendered non-canonical by "Q and Grey" establishing that Q and his mate were the first to have a child within the Continuum, I've decided for this shared universe that Q's son is actually Trelane, and that incident with Trelane kidnapping Kirk happened when Q's mate was still involved with the kid (and probably had something to do with her flinging her hands in the air and declaring she washed her hands of the kid). Which makes what Picard said to Q about Trelane's antics inadvertently even funnier, as Picard doesn't know Trelane is actually Q's son.
